Do you have one or more missing pearly whites? One of the most popular and effective methods to replace teeth is dental implants. With their essential support, they can preserve both a youthful appearance and your smile in the long run! However, there are certain ideas about the procedure that can make people hesitate to undergo the treatment. Keep reading to learn five of the most common dental implant myths and why you don’t have to worry about them.

Myth #1: Dental Implants Are Noticeable

Although dental implants are typically made of titanium, the restoration that sits on them is generally constructed out of porcelain or ceramic. This material looks and feels like natural teeth, meaning other people won’t be able to tell the difference. Since dental implants replace pearly whites from the root up, they’ll blend seamlessly with the rest of your smile!

Myth #2: Older People Get Dental Implants

Sometimes accidents can happen, such as knocking out a tooth, and this may require restorative treatment. As long as your gums and bones are fully developed, and you’re healthy overall, then you might consider getting dental implants. Your jawbone should mature completely in your early 20s, so you won’t have to wait until you’re 60 to replace missing teeth.

Myth #3: Dental Implants Are Expensive

While their cost will vary from person to person, they may not be as expensive as you imagine. Compared to treatments like bridges, which last around 10 years, your dental implants can last a lifetime! You’ll still need to replace your restorations eventually, but not as often as other methods, which can be costly over the years. Speak with your dentist if you have dental benefits so they can help you make the treatment more affordable.

Myth #4: Getting Dental Implants Is Painful

Your dentist will provide a local anesthetic to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. You may feel mild pressure as they embed the dental implants into your jawbone, but it should be painless. Your dentist might also offer sedation therapy if you’re feeling nervous or anxious to help you relax.

Myth #5: You Can’t Enjoy Your Favorite Meals with Dental Implants

During your recovery period, you’ll need to stick to softer foods for a few days. This is to protect the surgical site from damage or interruption, as the metal posts will need time to successfully bond with your jawbone. After this process is finished and your dentist gives you the green light, you’ll be able to eat all your favorite foods!

So, if you’re interested in getting dental implants, be sure to consult your dentist. They’ll thoroughly explain the long-term benefits of this treatment and walk you through your treatment plan.
