Avoid Doing These 5 Things After Dental Implant Surgery

Dental implants are one of the best methods for replacing missing teeth. Not only will they restore your full smile, but they can also help preserve the rest of your pearly whites and jawbone structure. However, part of their success is in how you take care of them right after getting them placed. Keep reading to learn five things you should avoid immediately following your dental implant surgery!

#1: Rinsing Your Mouth Excessively

While you’ll want to keep your mouth clean during your recovery period, you should make sure not to disturb the surgical site. You can brush and floss carefully around the area, but be sure not to rinse your mouth excessively, as this can dislodge the blood clot forming around the implant. To avoid this, gently swish the mouthwash around before letting it flow out over the sink instead of spitting out forcefully.

#2: Drinking Through a Straw

Though you might want to drink with a straw to avoid contacting your implant site, doing so can still be harmful to your recovery. The force created by the suction can potentially disturb the blood clot, interfering with the healing process. Not only can this cause discomfort, but it can also create a dry socket, which can make you susceptible to bacteria buildup. Try avoiding carbonated beverages from irritating your gums and drink plenty of water instead.

#3: Exercising Intensely

Even normal physical activity can increase your blood flow, which can cause bleeding in the surgical area. For this reason, you’ll want to refrain from intense exercise for two to three days after your surgery. Be sure to allow yourself ample time to rest until your dentist gives you the green light.

#4: Eating Hot or Hard Foods

You’ll want to stick to softer meals while recovering from getting dental implants. Foods that are hot or spicy can affect your healing process, which can hinder the success of your restorations. You should also chew on the opposite side of your mouth to prevent disturbing the surgical site or interrupting osseointegration.

#5: Smoking Tobacco

Tobacco products can increase your risk of oral cancer as well as hinder the bonding process between your jawbone and dental implants. This would be a perfect time to quit smoking, as you’ll be more likely to have strong and healthy restorations in the long run. You’ll also avoid more serious health issues, which can become costly if left unchecked.

By refraining from these few things for a week or two after your dental implant surgery, you can ensure a higher success rate for your restoration treatment. Once your dentist places your replacement teeth, you’ll be able to enjoy a fully functional and beautiful smile again!
