Have you been experiencing the throbbing discomfort of a toothache? This is often a sign of an infection in your mouth that needs to be treated by an emergency dentist as soon as possible. However, there is no need to be in pain and have your life completely disrupted while you wait for your appointment! Read on to learn about seven home remedies to help ease your discomfort until you get treatment from your dental team.

#1. Garble with Salt Water

One of the most common and effective remedies for toothache is a saltwater rinse. Combining warm water with salt serves as a natural disinfectant. It can reduce inflammation, heal oral sores, and help remove food debris from between your pearly whites.  And it is so simple to make: add ½ teaspoon of salt into warm water and gargle for instant relief.

#2. Rinse with Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is an emergency kit staple—it can relieve soreness, decrease inflammation, and minimize plaque. Additionally, it gets rid of harmful bacteria! To use specifically as a mouthwash to tend to your aching tooth, be sure to dilute it. Mix 3% hydrogen peroxide with an equal amount of water and you will be ready to attack your infection!

#3. Use a Cold Compress

Do you have an ice pack ready to go in your freezer? If so, you can use it to give you instant relief from a throbbing mouth. A cold compress is especially useful if your toothache is a result of some type of trauma. It will help decrease swelling in the area, since the low temperature causes the blood vessels to constrict, easing the soreness. If you don’t have an ice pack already in the freezer, simply apply a Ziplock bag of ice to the area of discomfort for 20 minutes at a time, repeating this every few hours.

#4. Apply Some Peppermint

Peppermint has been used as a healing herb for centuries. It can effectively soothe your toothache or numb any sensitivity in your gums. You can take a used peppermint tea bag, either warm or cold, and place it on the affected area. For extra relief, leave the tea bag in the freezer for a few minutes and then apply it.

#5. Crush Some Garlic

Garlic has been used as an antibacterial medicine for thousands of years and can efficiently relieve your toothache. Make a paste by crushing a garlic clove and applying it to the tender area. Or, if you can handle the taste, gently chew a clove of fresh garlic!

#6. Dab Some Vanilla Extract

This liquid goodness is not only for your delicious cakes! Vanilla extract contains alcohol, which is a disinfectant and pain reliever. Put a small amount onto your finger or a cotton ball and dab it on the area several times during the day.

#7. Apply Clove

As another one of nature’s natural antiseptics, clove oil can be diluted with a carrier oil like sunflower or jojoba oil to ease your tooth infection. You may apply it directly to the area of discomfort or use it as a mouthwash to sanitize and reduce inflammation.
