Early Detection of Oral Health Problems Could Save Your Child’s Smile!

Your child’s smile is precious, and not just because it is cute! A healthy mouth supports their overall wellness and provides benefits that can last a lifetime. If you are diligent about bringing your child to your family dentist for a checkup every six months, you are to be commended. These routine appointments can be absolutely crucial. Why are they so important? This blog post explains.

Prevent Extensive Procedures

One of the key purposes of routine dental appointments is to detect oral health problems as early as possible. This can prevent the need for extensive, expensive, and potentially traumatizing treatments for your child.

For example, treating a small cavity is a simple and straightforward process. However, if decay is allowed to continue without timely care, it can lead to many problems. There is even a chance that badly decayed teeth will need to be removed. (And do not think that decay in baby teeth does not matter — early extraction of baby teeth can negatively affect the incoming adult teeth.)

Promote Proper Development

Your child’s smile is still developing, so there is a chance that problems with the growth of their oral structures can be corrected before they become too serious. For example, our team may be able to help you break any bad habits your child has that might adversely affect their development, such as prolonged pacifier- or thumb-sucking.

Also, routine dental checkups can allow Dr. Makadia to spot potential problems that might require a specialist. For example, some kids need to visit an orthodontist for braces or other services that can guide the development of their oral structures.

Spare Your Child from Pain

If you have ever had a toothache, you know how terrible they can be! Sadly, many kids have to suffer from dental pain due to oral health problems that were not corrected early on. Dental pain may cause behavioral issues in children and even negatively affect their performance in school. The good news is that regular dental visits and diligent at-home care can prevent many painful oral problems.

Establish a Positive View of Dentistry

Taking your child to the dentist every six months can help them develop a lifelong positive attitude toward oral health care. A child who visits the dentist regularly in a friendly and non-threatening environment can grow to view dental care as a normal and even enjoyable part of life. This is especially true when your family dentist is a caring and attentive individual like Dr. Makadia.

When was your child’s last dental checkup? If it has been longer than six months, now is the time to book an appointment!
