When your child has a loose tooth, you may be tempted to grab some string and do the classic “tie it to a doorknob” trick. But is that really the best (or safest) way? While it might be exciting to speed things along, there are safe and gentle ways to help your child’s tooth come out when it’s ready. Here’s what parents should know.

Let Nature Do Most of the Work

Baby teeth typically become loose because the permanent tooth underneath is pushing its way in. This natural process causes the tooth’s roots to dissolve, which means the tooth will eventually fall out on its own. In many cases, the safest thing you can do is simply let the tooth fall out naturally.

Encourage your child to wiggle the tooth gently with their tongue or clean fingers. This helps loosen it further without causing pain or unnecessary bleeding.

Check If the Tooth is Truly Ready

Before you attempt to pull a tooth, make sure it’s ready to come out. A tooth that’s not loose enough can cause pain, bleeding, and even damage to surrounding tissue if forced out too early. The tooth should wiggle easily in all directions and sit loosely in the socket. If it’s barely moving, give it more time.

How to Safely Pull a Loose Tooth

If the tooth is extremely loose and your child wants it out, here’s the safest way to do it:

Wash your hands: Clean hands prevent bacteria from entering the area.

Use gauze or a tissue: Grip the tooth with a piece of clean gauze or tissue to get a good hold.

Gently twist, don’t yank: A slight twisting motion is usually all that’s needed. If there’s resistance or pain, stop and wait a few more days.

Control bleeding: After removal, have your child bite down on a piece of gauze for a few minutes to stop bleeding.

Avoid Forceful or Risky Methods

Avoid tying the tooth to a string, slamming doors, or using pliers. These old-fashioned tricks can traumatize the gum tissue and cause unnecessary pain or injury. They also increase the risk of infection if the tooth isn’t ready to come out.

When to Call the Dentist

If a tooth seems loose too early, is causing significant pain, or you notice swelling or infection, schedule a dental visit. Your dentist can safely evaluate the situation and make sure everything is progressing normally.

Helping your child lose a tooth should be a gentle, stress-free experience. When the tooth is ready, it will usually come out with minimal effort. By being patient and using safe techniques, you can make the process comfortable for your child and keep their mouth healthy as their new permanent teeth grow in.

About the Practice

Here at Cove Choice Dental, our mission is to help your little one enjoy dentistry.
