After the procedure, proper care is key to ensuring a smooth recovery. Here are 6 ways you can help your child heal comfortably and avoid complications after a tooth extraction.

1. Keep the Gauze in Place

Immediately after the extraction, your child will likely have gauze over the extraction site. Have them gently bite down on it for 20 to 30 minutes to help stop the bleeding and form a blood clot. This clot is crucial — it protects the underlying bone and nerves and is an important part of healing. If bleeding continues, replace the gauze as directed by your dentist.

2. Manage Pain and Swelling

Some soreness and swelling are normal after an extraction. Your dentist may recommend over-the-counter pain relievers appropriate for children. Applying a cold compress or ice pack to the outside of your child’s cheek for 10 to 15 minutes at a time can help reduce swelling and make them more comfortable.

3. Offer Soft, Nutritious Foods

Stick to a soft-food diet for the first day or two after the procedure. Yogurt, applesauce, smoothies, mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs are gentle on the extraction site and easy to eat. Avoid crunchy, hard, or spicy foods that could irritate the area. Encourage your child to chew on the opposite side of their mouth until healing progresses.

4. Avoid Straws and Sucking Motions

Using a straw, sucking on lollipops, or even forceful spitting can dislodge the blood clot, leading to a painful condition called dry socket. Have your child drink from a cup and gently rinse their mouth as directed by your dentist.

5. Encourage Rest and Limit Activity

Physical activity can increase blood flow and may cause the extraction site to bleed again. Encourage your child to rest and avoid running, sports, or vigorous play for the first 24 hours after the procedure. Quiet activities like reading, coloring, or watching a favorite show can help them relax.

6. Keep the Area Clean

Your dentist may recommend gently rinsing with warm salt water after the first day to keep the area clean. Continue your child’s regular brushing routine, but be careful to avoid the extraction site until it has started to heal. Good oral hygiene helps prevent infection and promotes faster recovery.

With the right care, most children recover from a tooth extraction quickly and with minimal discomfort. By controlling bleeding, managing pain, offering soft foods, and encouraging rest, you can help your child heal smoothly and get back to their normal routine.

About the Practice

Here at Cove Choice Dental, our mission is to help your little one enjoy dentistry.
